In practice we see that the most difficult thing for many already licensed but inexperienced skippers is to safely leave the mooring and return. It's not easy to keep your composure and focus when entering the narrows and harbour, while watching the weather change, with a hundred other yachts in and out of the marina, moorings sticking out, and someone on shore shouting something to you. It's all very exciting! The pressure from all sides will immediately recognise the experienced skipper and the one who is just starting out. So, for your peace of mind, we give mooring practice!

When attempting to moor or unmoor it is important:

not to hit the pontoon and/or a neighbouring boat
do not put anything foreign on the propeller
don't lose sailors

We will teach you how to sail the yacht under power in all winds and currents, when manoeuvring with other yachts, for easy and difficult pontoon runs.

We will teach you how to make a mooring algorithm step by step and instruct you what to do in case of an emergency situation.

And all this on our practical mooring course in the Daugava water area in Riga!

Why two days of practice?

The more times you practice the manoeuvre on the rudder, the better you will work in real mooring conditions. Plus, different weather conditions are possible on these days!

COURSE PROGRAMME

1 Block - Working with the crew and turning the yacht on the spot!

Your crew members are your hands, This is VERY important. These hands will save you in all situations if you manage these hands correctly.
How to make everyone work as a team.
Roles on the boat and areas of responsibility
Communication with the crew during mooring in order to moor safely
Turns the yacht in place in the direction of the stern throwing the propeller
Turns the yacht in place against the stern throwing the propeller
Turning the boat in place upwind and downwind
Forwards and backwards jolts and their effects
Maintaining an inertial turn
Turns fore and aft
Stopping the boat. Sometimes it is very difficult
Turning the boat round the pontoon. Working with springs!

Block 2: Steering the yacht in the narrows

Maintaining the boat stationary against the wind
Moving the boat sideways using the wind
Right stern to stern and bow to bow

3 Block: Mooring.

And what to do if something went wrong (we take time to do this too, for not everything in life is as smooth as we would like it to be)!

Left or right thrusters jammed, throttle handle fell off in full forward or reverse position, throttle control cable broke and no way to stop, gearbox jammed in forward position, mooching on the propeller, engine smoke and stalled - we will instruct how to act in these cases! Knowing how to moor correctly and calmly in any type of harbour is an essential skill for a yacht captain.

We do not issue licences! This is a practical course to practice self-mooring a sailing yacht. We will teach you how to assess the wind conditions and the current, if any. Teach you how to make the wind and current assist your exit or entry into the marina.
